The village Charter granted in AD 926 by King Edgar, mentions a church in Chelsworth, and a Domesday Church is first recorded here in 1086.  The church in Chelsworth has been dedicated to All Saint’s from the 12th Century at least.

The village is famous for its annual open gardens which has taken place for over 50 years in June. The event is held to raise funds for the local church and is extremely successful with a very engaging village community.

The area is full of walking opportunities. There are numerous local footpaths and shown on OS Maps. There are scenic walks along the watermeadows. The Chelsworth Woodland was purchased by the village in 2002 to be a space in which people can walk and relax. It runs to about two acres at the north-west end of the village.

Hollow Trees has grown significantly over the years. A roadside cart in 1986 is now a 140-acre farm with a farm trail for a great day out with the kids.

For over 1,000 years, the site of Suffolk ’s Cathedral has been one of worship and pilgrimage.

The death of Edmund, King of the East Angles, at the hands of the Danes in 869 led to the building of an abbey to house his remains.

The historic wool town of Lavenham offers a wealth of heritage with over 300 listed buildings and full of half-timbered and often crooked houses. Visit Lavenham Guildhall of Corpus Christi (owned by the National Trust) and the film locations for Harry Potter.

Lavenham features as a background for some the scenes in the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. Lavenham Guildhall was Harry Potter’s parents’ house and the De Vere house in Water Street also appears in the film.

The Danish leader Guthrum, is said to be buried in the grounds of St Mary’s Church in the town. He was defeated by King Alfred at the battle of Edington in 878 AD.

Since 1252, a weekly market has been held.
